| On May 31st, the Cancurables Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to Dr. Amy Skubitz, a professor at the University of Minnesota whose research for the past 13 years has focused on ovarian cancer. |

Dr. Skubitz has a special interest in developing better diagnostic markers for this disease and has used gene microarray technology to identify 66 genes that are present in high levels in ovarian cancer tissues compared to normal ovaries. In addition, she is using mass spectrometry-based proteomic technology to identify biomarkers in the sera of ovarian cancer patients.
Her goal is to incorporate the new biomarkers into a clinical blood test that could be used to screen women for early detection of ovarian cancer and/or recurrence of ovarian cancer. She will also check to see whether these proteins are made by ovarian cancer cells. This data will tell whether these same proteins may be good targets for new types of therapy that will go to the ovarian cancer tumor. The Cancurables Foundation is proud to support this vital research!
