Cancurables, I need for you to contact Your Art's Desire in Mtka. They are an art gallery.  Do not try to find out who I am.
                                                                             -PIG

The Cancurables Foundation received the rather cryptic email above, from someone going by the name PIG, demanding that we contact a local art gallery. We were perplexed, and honestly a bit concerned about the tone, but at the same time intrigued enough to make the call.  We’re glad we did, because we learned P.I.G. stands for “People Involved in Giving” – apparently an artist or group of artists who want to make a difference by helping us raise money for cancer research being done right here in Minnesota.   Over the past couple of months, PIG has been dropping off paintings at a few local galleries with the hope they will auction them off to raise money.  Now seriously, how cool is that?!?  And after repeated emails trying to get more information, we finally got the Artist’s Intention statement, we’ve added below for you to see.

I am a established artist who is looking for something to spice up the art world and the Twin Cities. One night as I am laying in bed pondering my life, I thought to myself that my world has a lot of restrictions. I want to do something where I am free to do what I want, I also thought I could do it for the sake of having complete fun and good, thus a charity foundation. Many galleries are feeling the weight of the economy so why not promote them at the same time. I thought if I can get people in the galleries, maybe they will buy other art as well. We need art to keep us from going insane! So I thought to myself, "Self" combine these elements and come up with a plan to fulfill the craziness in all of us.
I carefully planned my strategy and developed PIG. It actually stands for People Involved in Giving. It also happens to be a childhood nickname.

PIG is born
I am unsure how to auction them off, I am hoping you will have the wisdom in this. I want to focus on the art and the guerilla way of promoting it. I hope people see this as someone trying to bring a little fun into our lives and make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. An issue that effected my life re: friends. There is more to the story that will be revealed later.
Please forward this info to the other galleries that do not have email. I do need help in promoting this, so any contacts or means you have, please use. We "can" make PIG come to life! -VIVA LA PIG!!!

The paintings are extraordinary… the artist who did this painting is really talented.  The “guerilla-like” marketing - planting pigs and plastering signs everywhere is certainly interesting, we’re anxious to see what comes next.  And we’re definitely interested in seeing where this goes!  Perhaps we can convince the art gallery owners who agree with PIG’s mission to display the paintings and then come together for a big art auction event?  That would be a fun way to raise more money for cancer research!   Let us know what you think.

2008 Research Grant Recipient:
The Cancurables Foundation continues to support cancer research through grants to researchers who are working hard to fight ovarian and other types of cancer. We are proud to announce our 2008 Research Grant Award Recipient is Dr. Amy Skubitz!

Grant Recipient   Amy and Kristin

On May 31st, the Cancurables Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to Dr. Amy Skubitz, a professor at the University of Minnesota whose research for the past 13 years has focused on ovarian cancer.

Dr. Skubitz has a special interest in developing better diagnostic markers for this disease and has used gene microarray technology to identify 66 genes that are present in high levels in ovarian cancer tissues compared to normal ovaries.  In addition, she is using mass spectrometry-based proteomic technology to identify biomarkers in the sera of ovarian cancer patients.

Her goal is to incorporate the new biomarkers into a clinical blood test that could be used to screen women for early detection of ovarian cancer and/or recurrence of ovarian cancer.  She will also check to see whether these proteins are made by ovarian cancer cells.  This data will tell whether these same proteins may be good targets for new types of therapy that will go to the ovarian cancer tumor. The Cancurables Foundation is proud to support this vital research!
